Reminder: You’re not a cat!

by | Oct 1, 2022

If you are a business owner, take a moment and check yourself out in the mirror for a second. Do you have fur? Pointy ears? A tail? If you responded with a “no” to all of these questions, then you are most definitely not a cat.

This is actually great news because cats make for terrible business owners.

Why?

As the saying goes, curiosity kills them. Yet, being curious is a very important trait for business owners. In an earlier blog, we discussed how the CEO of Blockbuster was not remotely curious about Netflix. This major mistake caused his company to go under. It is 2022, and we are in an ever-changing world. There are always new social media platforms and trends to explore. To keep up with the times, you must stay curious about this to some extent. Consumers frequently check Facebook pages and sometimes assume a business is no longer operating just based on their lack of recent posts.

Cats are also known for being notoriously antisocial. But, when it comes to social media, this is no time to be a cat. Besides sharing posts, engaging with clients or potential customers is key! Every engagement provides an opportunity to show your audience that you have excellent customer service and sometimes even a great sense of humor, depending on the post.

By the way, indifference is not a charming quality, and cats definitely possess it. After a customer leaves a review, we highly recommend responding with a “thank you” at the bare minimum. A personal comment is even better. This is another chance for you to show off your stellar customer service to anyone who is watching your page or checking out your reviews to consider using your services.

Staying curious when it comes to the analytics of your social media posts can also be very valuable. By looking at your most popular posts, you can get a better idea of the content your audience prefers to consume. These insights can help you to understand the best times and days to post as well. We recommend trying out different forms of content too. Mixing it up with written posts, videos, and pictures will allow you to determine what seems to be the most popular for your specific followers.

Social media isn’t the only thing that business owners need to explore. You should be curious about Google and the necessary components your website will need to rank highly through search engine optimization (SEO). Furthermore, your curiosity should extend to digital ads. Ignoring this avenue for advertising can cost you so many potential customers. Sometimes people avoid dabbling in Google ads because the process seems overwhelming. However, with the addition of Google Local Service Ads, it has become so much simpler to advertise the specific services you offer, in your target locations, without any witty copywriting needed at all!

Why else do cats make bad business owners?

Well, for starters, they sleep approximately 15 hours per day. While we can all agree that a healthy work-life balance is essential for a happy life, hustle is also required! Particularly in the green industry, rigorous outdoor work is necessary, along with a long list of other to-dos that seem endless. This industry is not for the faint of heart!

Keeping their claws in is not an area of strength for cats. But in this day and age, it is an essential skill for business owners. It seems like every day, more and more Karens unfortunately emerge. Losing your cool with a customer like that can have a devastating effect. These days people are just waiting to lurk on your page and leave an awful review. So no matter how badly Karen deserves to be told off, retract those claws. Kindness always wins, even when rude people do not deserve it!

Cats actually have nearsighted vision too. As a business owner, you need to be able to look at the big picture in order to organize all the moving parts and pieces of your company. While being able to hyper-focus on some areas is an important skill at times, you still need to be able to assess how everything works together.

Promotions or gifts for your customers can also help to set your business apart and generate interest from potential clients. It also helps people remember your superior customer service. When you’re choosing what you will give away, we highly recommend avoiding dead mice.

Unfortunately, since you are, in fact, not a cat, you do not possess nine lives. Sadly, neither does your business. That is why it is imperative that you keep your attitude in check, hustle hard, and embrace curiosity at its finest to explore every possible avenue to help your company succeed!

Finally, anyone who has a feline living in their home knows that cats tend to place their rear ends in the faces of people to demonstrate that they trust them. This is really not recommended for business owners, and if you do this to a Karen, it might result in legal ramifications.
